Overview
        The College of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University started from the     establishment of the Department of Geology and Geography in 1952, which combined the faculty   from the Department of Geoscience at Tsinghua University and the Department of History at   Yanking University. In 1978, the Department of Geology and Geography was split into the   Department of Geology and the Department of Geography, in which physical geography, economic   geography and geomorphology were the three major interests. The Department of Geography at   Peking University was renamed as the Department of Urban and Environmental Sciences in 1989.   Then in 1993 and 2000, Environmental Science and Urban Planning as undergraduate programs were added, respectively, to the department. In 2007, the College of Urban and Environmental Sciences was founded on the original Department of Urban and Environmental Sciences. The College now has four departments, two research institutes, and dozens of research centers covering diverse fields. Members of the college pursue the excellence in research, education, and outreach in environment-related fields. Equipped with world-class research facilities and field stations, many faculty members are working towards the frontiers of environmental, ecological, and geographical sciences, and have made the College an exciting place to work.
      Faculty
   The college currently consists of 74 faculty members, including 30 full professors, 4 research fellows, 29 associate professors, 2 associate research fellows, and 9 assistant professors. Among the full professors, there are two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and three Cheung Kong Scholars. There are six Distinguished Young Scholars sponsored by the National Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Professors in the college are educated or trained by China’s top academic institutions and world-renowned universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, France, Germany and Hong Kong. Faculty in the college specialize in a wide range of areas and cover a variety of disciplines, including environmental science, ecology, geomorphology, physical geography, Quaternary geology, human geography (economic geography, urban geography and historical geography), urban planning, urban design and architecture. In addition, there are 17 staff handling a variety of administrative and laboratory functions.

   The college has a large number of high quality students recruited throughout the country. There are 446 undergraduate students, 191 master students and 172 doctoral students. The College welcomes about 100 new undergraduate students and 90 new graduate students each year. From their second year of college, undergraduate students are free to choose a major from the following concentration areas: environmental science, ecology, physical geography, urban planning and human geography. Graduate students choose degree concentration upon recruitment. The college has frequently sent students to study abroad for a certain period of time under the financial support of the Ministry of Education. A large share of graduates from the College enter some world-renowned universities to pursue advanced degrees.

   In addition, the College welcomes Post-doctoral research associates to work with professors for two or three years in chosen areas.
